The Inspector General of Police Williams Fayia Sellu explained that in 2022 the Transnational Crime Units (TOCU) intercepted Nigerian nationals at the Lungi Airport with 32 cartoons of Tramadol tablets and US$ 34,000 which was sent to the Central Bank for verification to ascertain whether it was authentic.
IG Sellu made this statement this past Monday 18th March when the Leadership of Parliament summoned Ministries Department & Agencies (MDAs) that are supposed to fight against Kush such as National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Police, Ministry Of Social Welfare and Children Affairs, National Revenue Authority and Sierra Leone Ports Authority at the Committee Room No.1 Parliament building Tower Hill in Freetown.
The IG continued that up till now they are yet to receive any information from the Bank of Sierra Leone about the said money.
He went on to say at the same Lungi Airport the police intercepted eight cartons of Tramadol and that six was with the police but that two of the staff working at Westminster ran away with two cartoons of the tramadol.
According to him, his men has cracked down a notorious drugs dealer by the name of Bigie Ten and that he instructed the magistrate not to give him bail.
He informed Parliamentarians that most of the drugs which they apprehended are from the airport, noting that the fight against drug is holistic approach.
He said that all containers going in and out of the quay should be monitored.
The Inspector General of police pointed out that the drugs dealers are living within the communities so they need to hold the traditional leaders such as headmen and others responsible.
He furthered that when they charged these drugs dealers to court they give them minimal fined and sentenced.
“We don’t have ashitone or masmalo leaves in Sierra Leone they come with it in the country they only way they can combat the issue of Kush is to establish Fast track Court on Drugs like what they did for rape,” the IG noted.
The Chief medical Officer Dr. Sattie Kanneh at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation said Kush has a variety base some are used for animals the Masmalo has anti-Malaria also it is hairdos and narcotic, pointing out that they have been seeing variety of kush and that medical practitioners are on the studies.
Hon Bashiru Silike staed that most of the Ghettos are closed to the Police Stations. Hon Dickson Rogers said that the Politicians must stop calling the police whenever they apprehended drugs dealers that are involve in this act.
