This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and African countries. It has also been designated as the China–Africa Year of People to People Exchanges. In this year of special significance, expectations are high for China–Africa relations to deepen further and deliver greater benefits for both peoples.
For seven decades, China–Africa friendship has stood the test of changing international circumstances and demonstrated remarkable vitality. For 36 consecutive years, China’s foreign minister has begun the year with a visit to Africa a tradition maintained regardless of circumstances. This consistency reflects the spirit and commitment of China’s diplomacy.
During a visit to Ethiopia earlier this year, people warmly recalled the memorable scenes of Premier Zhou Enlai’s historic visit to Africa. In Tanzania, citizens still cherish the memory of Chinese assistance in building the TAZARA Railway. They remember the young Chinese engineers and workers who dedicated their lives to the project and never returned home. These stories highlight how China–Africa friendship has been passed down from generation to generation built heart to heart and strengthened through shared sacrifice and effort.
In the new era, Chinese President Xi Jinping continues to place great importance on relations with Africa. He emphasizes sincerity, real results, amity, and good faith in cooperation with African partners constantly reminding officials of China’s enduring friendship and shared interests with the continent. This approach has helped elevate China–Africa cooperation to new heights.
Only two months into 2026, President Xi has already sent three messages to African partners: a congratulatory letter for the launch of the China–Africa Year of People to People Exchanges, a reply to veterans of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, and a congratulatory message to the African Union Summit for the 14th consecutive year. These gestures underline China’s commitment to ensuring that the torch of China–Africa friendship continues to pass from one generation to the next, while reaffirming China’s steadfast support for Africa’s development and revitalization.
Looking ahead, China–Africa relations are expected to witness several new developments this year.
First, fresh steps will be taken to build a China–Africa community with a shared future. China plans to host several African leaders to strengthen mutual support as all-weather partners and to write a new chapter in their shared journey.
Second, China will implement zero-tariff access for 100 percent of African imports starting May 1. As part of China’s commitment to high-standard opening-up, this move aims to boost trade, expand opportunities, and enable African countries to better access the vast Chinese market.
Third, nearly 600 activities will be organized during the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Through these events, China hopes to work closely with African partners to draw inspiration from their rich civilizational heritage, strengthen bonds between their peoples, and ensure that the friendship between China and Africa continues for generations to come.
