(232news) –
Leading APC flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, solemnly commemorated the anniversary of Sierra Leone’s 11-year civil war in Kailahun District, reflecting on the nation’s painful past and the lessons it offers for the future.
It was in Bomaru, a border town in Kailahun, that on 23 March 1991, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), led by Foday Sankoh, fired the first shot igniting a brutal conflict that claimed over 50,000 lives, displaced millions, and left the country in ruins.
Honoring the Past: A Moment of Silence for War Victims
During a well-attended DIB Movement meeting in Kailahun Town on Monday, Dr. Bangura led a moment of silence to honor both the outbreak of the civil war and the thousands who lost their lives during the conflict.
A scholar in peace and conflict resolution, he used the occasion to engage residents particularly APC supporters on the importance of remembering history and working collectively to prevent a recurrence of past tragedies.
A Personal Connection to Kailahun
Highlighting Kailahun’s historical significance and the suffering it endured during the war, Dr. Bangura noted that his academic research on the role of women in peacebuilding brought him to the district on several occasions.
He expressed a deep personal connection to Kailahun, describing it as holding a “special place” in his heart.
Praise for APC Legacy and Development Efforts
Dr. Bangura commended APC supporters for their dedication and praised former President Ernest Bai Koroma for key infrastructural developments in the district, including improvements to the road network, the pipe-borne water project, and the main hospital.
A Message of Unity Ahead of 2028 Elections
Addressing party matters, Dr. Bangura called for unity, reflection, and renewed commitment among APC members. He lauded supporters in Kailahun for their loyalty and sacrifices, urging them to remain disciplined and united to secure victory in the 2028 elections.
Strong Endorsements and Growing Support
The meeting, hosted by APC Regional Chairman Comrade Stanley Moiwo Maya Kaikai, brought together newly elected ward leaders, executives from all ten constituencies, and key regional stakeholders. Chairman Kaikai said the gathering was intended to reaffirm Kailahun’s continued support for Dr. Bangura’s leadership aspirations.
A major highlight of the event was an address by APC regional strongwoman Finda Diana Konomanyi, who publicly endorsed Dr. Bangura for the first time. She urged delegates to prioritize leadership qualities such as humility, vision, and service delivery, describing Dr. Bangura as the candidate who embodies these traits.
Positioning for Leadership Through Reflection
Dr. Bangura’s reflective approach—rare in post-war Sierra Leone—earned him considerable goodwill. By choosing this solemn anniversary to engage directly with the people of Kailahun and emphasize lessons from the past, he distinguished himself from his competitors and reinforced his commitment to thoughtful, inclusive leadership.
Conclusion: Renewed Calls for Discipline and Party Unity
The meeting concluded with renewed calls for unity, discipline, and sacrifice within the APC, as the race for the party’s flagbearer position continues to intensify.
