FREETOWN, July 25 (232news.com) – The Freetown Waste Transformers (FWT) has on Wednesday 20th July 2022, successfully carried out a demonstration and Alpha Testing of a waste collection software application being developed to digitalize waste collection in Sierra Leone.

The demonstration was carried out by MeDomot – a team of young Sierra Leonean software developers hired by FWT. The testing which was done virtually to FTW’s partner, The GSMA Innovation Fund was a build-up to a live data testing that would ascertain the effectiveness of an app that is set to revolutionize the country’s waste collection.

Consequently, the Live Data Testing of the updated version of the app would be piloted among five (5) youth groups, ten (10) customers randomly selected in different communities in Freetown, FWT staff, Freetown City Council (FCC) and the Waste Collection Management Association (WCMA) in August this year.

FWT Chief Executive Officer, Aminata Dumbuya Jarr, said the project which will help deliver a tailor-made solution in garbage collection is being funded through a grant from the GSMA Innovation Fund, supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).

“FWT is an integrated waste – to- energy solutions provider in Sierra Leone that takes all food waste and transform it into electricity, heat, and fertilizer right from the customer’s doorsteps. It cuts cost on your energy and waste management bills with a low-tech Waste Transformer” she said.

Chief Executive Officer, MeDomot, Joseph Jawa Kebbie explained that his team had conducted several needs assessment surveys and based on their findings, they were able to fully capture the requirements of the application in line with users’ demands and constraints.

After the demonstration exercise, representatives of The GSMA Innovation Fund as well as other parties present were vividly impressed with the work so far.

The excitement among representatives of the ten selected youth groups was palpable as one of them averred.

“We will be among the first set of people to test the app and I believe it will restore hope and confidence to customers and waste collection will become far more attractive because of this transformation.”
