The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the22nd December 2022 ended a three-day training at Sierra Bay Hotel, former Sierra Lighthouse, Man O War Bay, Aberdeen, in Freetown.

The three-day training for Media Professionals on Promoting Responsible Reporting on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Policy started on the  20th December, 2022.

The training according to UNDP is part of the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism.

The training which attracted journalists from across the country is focussed on promoting responsible reporting and representation of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Policy. This is geared towards the promotion of best practices for responsible, ethical, and safe reporting on gender policies, especially sexual and gender-based violence.

As the theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism is “Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the training provided a platform for engagement to build media networks that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

According to UNDP they are looking forward to having journalists’ participation in promoting ethical and professional reporting of gender equality and women’s rights issues in Sierra Leone.

Day one topics such as gender mainstreaming, the role of sociocultureal norms, traditional viewpoints, and gendered stereotypes in promoting gender inequality and violence against women among others were presented by Florence Sesay, Yeama Sarah Thompson and Kadiatu Bachalle Taylor.
