It is no more a hidden fact that most of the sporting disciplines in Sierra Leone have conflict among members. Some even with the intervention of the Sports Ministry have gone for years without settlement. Some have gone to the extent of taking their conflict to court but still, there is no peace.

In this case, the Sports Ministry noticed that some of these sports are not developing due to the rangling among them.

Because of the above, the Ministry of Sports in collaboration with NSA has decided to celebrate this day with the various sporting disciplines and preach peace for development to them.

The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace was adopted in August 2013 by the UN General Assembly choosing April 6th as the day to celebrate it. According to the organizers, sports has become a powerful vehicle for social inclusion, gender equality, youth empowerment and peaceful coexistence among nations and communities with huge benefit across all sectors.

As the general elections is schedule to take place this year, Sports Minister Ibrahim Nyelenkeh is hopeful that the celebration today will help to maintain peace during and after the elections.

The international theme for this year’s celebration is ‘scoring for people and the planet. According to the Sports Minister, sports is an inclusive game played between two or more people and with spectators. He is hopeful that this year’s celebration will unify the nation leading to the general elections. The celebration will take place today at Lumley Beach in Freetown.
