The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) created through an Act of Parliament seeks to take measures to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts, to build, promote and maintain sustainable peace in Sierra Leone, and to provide for other related matters has been launched by the Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Jacob Jusu Saffa. 

The launch of ICPNC took place last Thursday 20th April at the Freetown International Conference Centre, Bintumani, Freetown in the presence all works of life. 

Speaking at the event, United Nations Resident Coordinator to Sierra Leone, Babatunde Lamoonsi, thanked the President of Sierra Leone for launching the ICPNC.

He furthered that in April 2016 the UN General Assembly and Security Council adopted resolutions of peacebuilding, introducing the concept of sustaining peace.

He continued that in January 2017, the Sectary General of the UN placed conflicts preparation for sustainable peace at the heart of the UN Assembly. 

The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone representative, Jessie Fornah, said the Inter-Religious Council provided leadership for the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) in Sierra Leone.

He continued that they participated in 2018 Elections and engaged with stakeholders, Section Leaders, Political Parties, the Security and Religious and group leaders, and with the President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio to address the August 10 violence demonstration. 

Speaking on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone Chief Minister, Jacob Jusu Saffa, said in President Bio’s Government, no Journalist is in Prisons for the work of journalism.

He continued that the government always commemorates Press Freedom day. He furthered that Sierra Leone is rated among the top 5 peaceful countries in the Africa. He encouraged ICPNC, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Youths Council, among others to Maintain Peace in Sierra Leone.

He noted that the government is committed to the ICPNC. He also said Peace is a positive action and dynamic Action, noting that the government is promoting and maintaining peace in Sierra Leone.

He said the government has worked through partners, Civil Society, to maintain peace in Sierra Leone. 

Chief Minister of Sierra Leone Jacob Jusu Saffa also launched the toll-free line 898 that will be in the situation room during the elections
