In a gathering to celebrate the Independent Anniversary of the United States, the United State Ambassador to Sierra Leone called on the government to address transparency around elections.
This comes after the United States in joint press statement with the International Community expressed concern over lack of transparency on certain stages of the just concluded June 24 Multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone.
In his statement, Ambassador David D. Reimer, commended the resilience of the people of Sierra Leone for queuing for long hours to exercise their democratic right to vote.
He also commended the Government of the Sierra Leone and the people of Sierra Leone for mainstreaming gender in the country, he however continued to express concern over the lack of transparency around tabulation of votes by the ECSL in the just-concluded general elections, and urged the Government to address that going forward.
Speaking on behalf of the Government, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mamadi Gobeh Kamara emphasized that President Bio was re-elected in a free, fair, transparent, peaceful and credible elections.
She thanked the people of Sierra Leone for extending his mandate, acknowledging the support of the US in deepening Sierra Leone’s democracy and urged both countries to continue to work together.
