The Sierra Leone Handball Association is presently engaged in capacitating grassroots coaches with a level 1 coaching course. The above course is funded by the Olympic Solidarity through the National Olympic Committee in Sierra Leone.
The 10 days kick off on the 17th July 2023 and will end on the 27th July 2023 at the OlymAfrica Center Hall at Godrich, Freetown.
The course expert is from Netherlands. According to the association the 35 participants both male and female were selected across the country.
Among the 35 participants, they said some are retired Handball players, few still active players, community people and school teachers who have opted to end their Handball career as a coach.
The essence of the above course is to spread the game nationwide. After the course, they said the participants will go to the schools and the various communities to train the grassroots players.
Those who will perform well in the course will later do the level 2 course and the best coaches will be selected to be in charge of the various Handball national teams.
In the course the participants will do both theory and practical and at the end they will take theory and practical exams. At the end of the coaching course process, certificates will be giving all those who participated in the course.
They will now use the experience form the course to go and train the others both grassroots coaches who did make it in the course and the players. The course expert in her statement emphasize the importance of the course which she said will help to expand the game by recruiting more players. She appealed to the participants not to relent as she said they should push to get level2 &3 after this.
In the course, she said they will be learning not only to play the game but also the methodology part of the game.
On the part of the exams, she said they should not be too worried as she will start assessing them from day one of the course. The assessment she said will cover their activities during their discussions during the course, in the practical and the theory exams.
