Sierra Leone Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj Gen Rtd. David T.O. Taluva has stated that not all Lawlessness is from drugs but some are acts of recklessness.
Minister Taluva was addressing journalists past Tuesday at the weekly press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Freetown.
The Internal Affairs Minister cited the Immigration office which he said is their responsibility of properly checking the status of persons entering the country, thereby ensuring that mal-intended persons do not enter the country.
Minister Taluva emphasized that there are lots of things affecting the internal security of Sierra Leone than the crimes they commit. Speaking on lawlessness, the minister stated that there are different kinds of lawlessness in the country, such as political lawlessness, criminal and motivated lawlessness; and poor parenting.
He explained that they have strategies that they will be using to end Kush abuse in Sierra Leone such the building the capacity of people to help fight against Kush, to cutoff the supply chain, making the youth useful in society by giving them jobs, and monitoring the movement of other drugs in Sierra Leone.
He also said that his Ministry, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor, and the Ministry of Education have a role to play to help the fight against Kush in the country.
“It is a collective responsibility of every citizen to help save our country from such issues. If this drug abuse is not stopped, then Sierra Leone does not have a future,” the Minister said.
Minister of Social Welfare, Madam Melrose Karminty, said the most vulnerable people are the disables.
“We need more money to take care of the welfare of the people”, she stated.
She further said that the Ministry of Health also has a responsibility when it comes to the health of the physically challenged.
“There are not enough rehabilitation centers in the country. We have employed 140 Social Workers to work in these centers, and they should also profile those people that are being admitted in these centers, and also need the intervention of the religious leaders to participate in these rehabilitations,” Madam Melrose said.
