The moral guarantors of the agreement of the joint ECOWAS –AU-UNOWAS mission have called on political actors and citizens to be calm and prioritize peace and unity above every other partisan interest.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission H.E. Omar Alieu Turay in consultation with the chairperson of the African Union Commission H.E. Musa Faki and the special Representative of the Secretary-General and the Head of United Nations for West Africa and the Sahel H. E. Leonardo Santos Samão has deployed a joint ECOWAS-AU-UNOWAS Assessment Mission to the Republic of Sierra Leone. This is a follow up to the Agreement for National Unity signed between the government of Sierra Leone and the All People Congress Party on October 18th 2023.

The mission is co-led by H .E. Leonardo Santos Simão, a special Representative of the Secretary –General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and H.E. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of the Republic of the Gambia.

The Mission will meet with senior government officials and the leadership of the All Peoples Congress (APC) party other political parties as well as all relevant actors and stakeholders in the country. The mission will further engage the hierarchy the Security Agencies and the Tripartite Committee to assess the progress made on the implementation of the Agreement of National Unity. The Mission will also pay a courtesy call on the president of the Republic H.E. Maada Bio.

The release however urged all political actors and citizens to remain calm and to prioritize peace and unity.

This development comes after the opposition All People Congress (APC) Party withdrew from participating in the tripartite committee process causing a mounting tension in the country.
