FREETOWN, May 27 (232news.com) – Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report of Sierra Leone revealed that one of the fundamental causes of the war is the politicization of the traditional rulers election by the politicians.
This was seen this past Saturday when President Bio moved to Sogbini Chiefdom in Bonthe District with a high-power delegation including the Chief Minister Jacob Jusu Saffa, Sierra Leone Ambassador to China Ernest Ndomina among others to ensure that his brother was voted for as the sole candidate.
According to some of the people of Sogbini Chiefdom, the President put pain in the other family by disenfranchising the other ruling house to allow his (the President) brother Prince Lansana Bio as the sole candidate in the Paramount Chief election.
They aggrieved family said that they shouldn’t be playing with the traditional authority because it will create chaos.
They explained that the son of the demise paramount chief PC Steven Bayo who should have contested against the President Brother was unlawfully disqualified and that the court failed to put an injunction on the election because according to the aggrieved party, the judge failed to show up for the matter.
“This is not actually good for democracy. There is no PC election that has only one ruling house,”a member of the aggrieved party said.
Press Secretary to the President said that the election was free and fair and that the President didn’t influence the election and that if there is any issue there are due processes that must be followed.
About the eligibility of the President and his wives who are not ordinarily resident in the Chiefdom, Keketoma Sandi said that they have paid their taxes and have met all requirements for them to vote and that as democrats, the President and his wife participated in the process.
