What should have been a moment of solidarity behind President Julius Maada Bio turned out to be an embarrassing moment when the wife of the President, Fatima Jabbie Bio took the podium to address the delegates of the SLPP at the 13 National Delegate Conference on Wednesday 8 February.
Everybody in the hall thought that Fatima Bio will use such an opportunity to energize the support base of her husband rather she used the opportunity to throw shades here and there.
She went into an outburst of an accident of motorcade that happened last weekend on her way to Freetown from Kono in Makeni when a lorry drove into her convoy and for which certain people say it was an assassination attempt on her.
“If I am the one, they want to kill, I think I need protection,” she stated.
She said that now she will always thank the grassroots of the party because according to her, she is unable to count the number of calls she received from the grassroots of the party.
“… but guess what in President Bio’s government, it was 10 or less than 10 Ministers called to check on me.”
She hinted that she has a constituency unlike some of those who are serving in the current government, pointing out that, “if she could do the job also not only as President Bio’s wife but also I am doing this SLPP person and I have a constituency, I think they should protect me.”
Adding that, “if they don’t protect her, she will go and sit down. We are asking President Bio to provide security for me.”
This statement moved the President from her sit to come and talk to her wife who may have angered so many people in the hall.
Some of the delegates in the hall believed that those statements by the first lady were unnecessary and unwarranted.
