International Women’s Day is a special day set aside by the United Nation to celebrate the socio-economic, cultural and political achievements of women all over the world.
The day also marked affirmative actions on women’s rights and strong policies on not just gender parity but also women’s empowerment.
As a result of that, Sierra Leone will join the rest of the world to celebrate the day Tomorrow 8 March and SALONE TIMES has carefully chosen five women who have made huge impacts in their callings, inspired lots of their counterparts.
MANTY TARAWALLY: Manty Tarawally is the Minister of Gender And Children Affairs in Sierra Leone. She has been very instrumental in ensuring that Sierra Leone has a law protecting and providing a 30% quota in all sectors. The Gender Act did not just provide for a 30% quota in ordinary areas but also in managerial and leadership positions. It also provides for the financial empowerment of women in Sierra Leone and has also made it lawful for women to be given a mandatory 14 weeks of maternity leave with full payment and benefits. Posterity will judge Madam Manty Tarawally right for being the Minister of Gender who led the passing of a law protecting and empowering women and girls in Sierra Leone.
- RUGIATU NENNEH TURAY: Rugiatu Nenneh Turay was the former Deputy Minister of Social Welfare in the erstwhile government. He has been an anti-FGM campaigner or better put a campaigner calling for bloodless initiation into the Bondo Society. She recognized that there are good aspects of the top female society in Sierra Leone in training and preparing women for adult life. She has succeeded in embarking on several “bloodless” initiation in the north of Sierra Leone. She has also built a school for girls in her home town of Port Loko to help empower girls.
- JUSTICE MIATTA SAMBA: Justice Miatta Maria Samba was Supreme Court Judge in Sierra Leone who is currently representing Sierra Leone in the International Criminal Court. Before going to the Bench, she was an anti-graft prosecutor of Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission where she dealt with several high-profile corruption cases. She was also a University Criminal Law Lecturer at Fourah Bay College (FBC) Law Department. She has inspired lots of young ladies to want to be like her in Sierra Leone.
- DR. YANKAMA MANTY JONES: Dr. Manty Jones is an economist and public policy expert in the Ministry of Finance in Sierra Leone. She is currently leading research in the Ministry and he is also a motivational speaker encouraging many young people to be like her.
- ASMA JAMES: Madam Asma James is a female campaigner, journalist and human rights activist who has inspired so many young girls in the country. She has over 20yrs experience in broadcasting and management, leading one of Sierra Leone’s top radio stations. She is the founder of the Black Tuesday Movement, campaigning against teenage pregnancy and rape in the country.
