Members of Parliament on Thursday, February 23rd, sent The Child Rights Act, 2022 to the Legislative Committee so that parliamentarians can make their input on the bill.

The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs Manty Tarawallie while presenting the bill to parliament, said that the bill’s objectives are to repeal and replace the Child Right act, 2007, and cap 44.

Madam Tarawallie pointed out that the bill is divided into parts ranging from the welfare of the children to certain offenders of the children.

Acting Leader of Business Hon Bashiru Silikie said that there has been a lot of consultation concerning the bill and that all the grey area has been highlighted, noting that, the bill will repeal the Child Rights act, 2007  and that in this new act, they want to maintain the cultural value such as corporal punishment and initiation.

Hon Charles further that there are lot of good provisions in the bill but that the bill requires further consultation.

The Speaker of Parliament Dr. Abass Bundu drew the attention of members of parliament to clause 24, noting that he did not want to preside over a parliament that borrowers from other foreign cultures.
