The newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yong, has commended the country’s security situation and growing economic progress during a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu.

The meeting took place at the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters in Freetown as part of Ambassador Yong’s familiarization visits to key government institutions following his recent assumption of office.

During the engagement, the ambassador expressed satisfaction with the prevailing peace and stability in Sierra Leone, noting that the safe environment has contributed significantly to economic growth and increased investment opportunities.

“Sierra Leone is safer than many other countries, and I am impressed with the social and economic progress under the leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio,” Ambassador Yong said.

He noted that stability and good governance in the country have created a conducive environment for development and improved the welfare of citizens.

Ambassador Yong also highlighted the strong bilateral relations between China and Sierra Leone, stating that cooperation between the two countries continues to expand through trade, infrastructure development, and investment by Chinese companies.

He cited several major Chinese-supported projects, including the construction of the fish harbour at Black Johnson Beach, the rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens Stadium, the ongoing upgrading of the China–Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital, and the implementation of Smart City initiatives.

The ambassador also emphasized that the Chinese Embassy continues to encourage Chinese nationals living and working in Sierra Leone to respect the country’s laws, traditions, and cultural values.

Responding, IGP Sellu expressed appreciation for the long-standing partnership between China and Sierra Leone, noting that the relationship has contributed significantly to national development.

He recalled that the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters on George Street currently undergoing refurbishment was originally constructed by the Chinese government about fifty years ago.

IGP Sellu further disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police has established a special liaison desk to facilitate coordination between Chinese investors and the Chinese Embassy.

He assured the ambassador of the Sierra Leone Police’s continued commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Chinese nationals and investors operating in the country.
