In a significant move to combat the growing threat of substance abuse in Sierra Leone, Dasy & Jabbie (D&J) Physiotherapy is preparing to launch the country’s first ultra-modern Centre for Drug Counseling (CDC) and rehabilitation facility in Kenema. The center, which will serve not only Sierra Leone but also neighboring countries in the Mano River Union, aims to address the pressing issue of drug abuse, particularly the rise in the use of Kush, a synthetic drug that has posed serious health risks to the youth population.

This initiative aligns with one of President Bio’s key campaign promises: to reform the nation’s youth and help them make positive contributions to their communities. The D&J Country Director noted that once completed, the center will intensify efforts to tackle the escalating drug problem, which has hindered national development. She emphasized the urgent need for practical solutions to address the challenges posed by substance abuse in Sierra Leone.

The launch of this center is a testament to the determined approach of D&J Physiotherapy’s management in the fight against drug abuse. It is hoped that this initiative will not only reduce the immediate impact of substance misuse but also contribute to the long-term health and well-being of Sierra Leone’s youth.

Dr. Sheku Jabbie, the Coordinator for the Centre for Drug Counseling (CDC), described the initiative as a significant step towards youth development. He highlighted the center’s focus on combating drug abuse, particularly the widespread use of Kush, which threatens national progress. Dr. Jabbie outlined the resources being provided to support individuals struggling with substance abuse, including mental health first aid, access to support services, and public awareness campaigns on the effects of drug use.

The CDC will promote mental health and emotional well-being, foster resilience, and create a supportive environment for those undergoing rehabilitation and recovery. Continuous education and collaboration with stakeholders will be key in addressing the mental health challenges linked to substance abuse.

In addition to its work on drug rehabilitation, D&J Physiotherapy has provided medical equipment to various government institutions, including the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), and government hospitals. They have also contributed to solving water shortages in communities by installing boreholes.

As the project moves forward, Dr. Jabbie emphasized the importance of community-driven initiatives in combating drug abuse, stating that collaboration and education are essential in creating a healthier and more supportive environment for all. The launch of the center signals hope for a brighter future for the country’s youth, as efforts to reform and protect them from the dangers of substance abuse gain momentum.
