The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-SL), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), concluded the grand finale of the first-ever Youth-led Green Solutions Innovation Challenge, where nine finalists presented their projects. The event held at the Family Kingdom in Aberdeen on 29th October 2024, celebrated creative, sustainable solutions to environmental challenges under the theme “Green Solutions Innovation Challenge Pitching Day.”

Peter George, representing Ideal Technology, secured first place with his “Solar Backpack” invention, scoring 41.0%. Mariama Gendemeh of Fresh Veggies followed in second place with 37.9%, while Kabbah Fofanah of Eco Plastics earned third place with 35.3%.

The journey to the finale involved a rigorous five-month process that included applications, screenings, pitching sessions, and a bootcamp. From an initial pool of 450 applicants, 22 were invited to attend a bootcamp at Unipod with the University of Sierra Leone, where nine finalists were eventually selected.

In his remarks, Dr. Abu-Bakar Massaquoi, Executive Chairman of EPA-SL, expressed gratitude to the UNDP Accelerator Lab, the University of Sierra Leone, the private sector, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and the media for their support in making the inaugural challenge a success. He highlighted the agency’s commitment to protecting Sierra Leone’s natural resources, promoting biodiversity, and advancing sustainable development. “The innovation and dedication displayed by these young people is inspiring,” he noted, adding that EPA-SL plans to further engage youth in tackling environmental issues.

UNDP Resident Representative Fredrick Hans Ampiah praised the enthusiasm and potential of the innovative projects, emphasizing UNDP’s dedication to supporting initiatives that address environmental challenges. He remarked, “The level of participation and innovation showcased here is truly encouraging. We are thrilled to collaborate with EPA in fostering these specialized solutions.”

Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Yema Mimi Soba-Stephens, shared her appreciation for the creativity and passion the finalists brought to the challenge. “The youth have a crucial role to play in confronting today’s environmental challenges,” she said, encouraging participants to bring the same commitment and energy to future challenges.

The three winners will receive small grants from UNDP through EPA-SL to support their green innovation projects, which will also be monitored for progress and impact.
