The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone on Monday 4th November, 2024 continued its training of members of District Human Rights Committees (DHRCs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the northern region on the Importance of Human Rights Indicators for Effective Monitoring & Reporting on Treaty Bodies and Special Mechanisms.

Spearheaded by the Directorate of Treaty Bodies Reporting and Other International Mechanisms, the two-day training at the Bombali District Council Hall in Makeni is funded by UNDP and Irish Aid.

At the end of the training, DHRCs and CSOs will be equipped to monitor and report on the effective implementation of recommendations.

Adama B. Sesay, Vice Chairperson of the Bombali District Human Rights Committee stated that the training will enhance their capacity to monitor and report effectively on human rights issues, especially recommendations on Treaty Bodies and Special Mechanisms.

She promised to use the knowledge gained to educate other members of the Committee on the importance of monitoring and reporting effectively on the recommendations and added “It will be difficult to report on human rights issues if you are not knowledgeable.”

In his brief statement, Commissioner Hassan Samba Yarjah acknowledged the invaluable support of DHRCs and CSOs to the work of the Commission in protecting and promoting the rights of all in Sierra Leone.

He urged participants to not only monitor issues of human rights, especially on Treaty Bodies and Special Mechanisms but also provide accurate report for prompt actions.
