The Sierra Leone Cricket Association on Wednesday 8th March 2023 celebrated the International Women’s day with female Cricket league matches at the POW Ovals.

The two matches were from the SLCA Women’s premier league between the defending champions SL Police female CC Versus Correctional Service female CC.

In the second match was Newton female CC Versus Murray Town female CC from the SLCA Women’s division1 league.

Gracing the occasion were Justice Glenna Thomson and her sister Madona Thompson the CEO of PKF, Beresford Bournes-Coker former SLCA Chairman, SLCA Chairman Francis Trevor Samura, SLCA Directors, SWASAL Members, Sheku Alim Caway SLCA CEO and several other club executives.

In the first match, the Sierra Leone Police female CC batted first and scored 105 runs all out in 19.3 overs. Correctional Service female CC replied with 106 runs loss of 5 wickets in 17.3 overs. Correctional Service won the match by 5 wickets.

In her statement after the first match, Justice Glenna Thompson told the players that she was impressed with their performance and that though Police lost the match, it was a tight match.

She explained that what impressed her much was the presence of the multitude of young exciting players. This she said was good for the development of the game as they will be the future stars.

As women, she said they may not stay long into the game like the men do as such she encouraged them to back up their sports with education.

Put seriousness in your training and win more laurels for Sierra Leone said Justice Thompson.

Madona Thompson’s PKF sponsored the female national team and linked them with Access Bank Sierra Leone. She too encouraged the ladies to take the game with seriousness and promised they will help when the need arises.

The Cricket Chairman outlined that the Women have three tournaments this year to take part in. The three tournaments are, the Nigeria women’s T20 invites in March 2023, Botswana in late August 2023 and South Africa in September.

Besides the ladies, the U-19 Men will travel to Tanzania this year. The men’s national team will travel to South Africa if they qualify in Nigeria this year.

In all, he said they have six tournaments to take part in this year and they need over $300, 000. In this case, he said the ongoing league is part of the preparation for the female tournaments ahead.

He called on the players to take the training serious and say the selection is open to all players as even a player from the division1 league will make it to the final list if she performs well.

The president of the Sports Writers Association Sahr Morris Jr. assured the association that the Sports journalists will continue to give them full coverage in all their activities.

In the division 1 match, Newton female CC defeated Murray Town CC by 8 wickets. Murray Town won the toss and opted to bat first.

They scored 48 runs loss of 5 wickets in 15.0 overs. Newton female replied with 49 runs loss of 2 wickets in 9.2 overs.
