The Chairman of the Audit Select Committee Hon Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella stated that out of 18,000 people employed by the Public Service Commission only 1,000 employees submitted certificates to the special audit report in Parliament for verification.

According to Hon Dr. Yumkella, the committee has to certify with various universities but it was not successful because the committee has not been provided with funds to carry out their work, noting that the nation did not take the issue seriously.

Hon Dr. Yumkella further stated that the health service Commission has over 11,000 employees and that most of them are not qualified and they give the wrong treatment to patients in the hospitals.

He informed the Speaker that three institutions were investigated and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) but there was no prosecution because there was no witness to testify against these institutions which were given the fake degrees to fifteen people under a mango tree.

The Committee interviewed the West Africa Examination Council, Tertiary Education, Commission, and Universities.

The Committee stated that the fake degree issue in Tanzanian was successful because the President took the lead to investigate the issue, wherein over 10,000 workers lost their job.

The committee pointed out that an action plan has been designed in the report with regard what can be done and the setting up of a digitalized agency for the sixth parliament.

They added that this investigation is an ongoing process and that the issue of fake degrees should be fixed and addressed with the seriousness it deserves.

Hon Dr. Yumkella stated that the issue of fake degrees came up last year in March following a leaked video of people receiving degrees under a mango tree and that a special select audit committee was set up in April to investigate the issue of fake degrees and certificates in the public service.
