FREETOWN, May 14 (SALONE TIMES) –The The National Council for Civic Education and Development (NaCCED) in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) organized the 61st Independence Anniversary of Inter Secondary Schools Quiz Competition for pupils in JSS2 and JSS3 Classes.
The event took place on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th May 2022 at the Freetown City Auditorium, Freetown.
Schools that participated in first rounds of the first day in the morning Session which was Thursday 5th May 2022 are Government Junior Secondary School, Freetown Secondary School For Girls(FSSG) and Dr June Holst Roness Municipal Secondary School.
The first day of the competition of the final round scores are Government Junior Secondary School Scores 49 point, Freetown Secondary School for Girls scores 38 point which became the runner up, Dr June Holst Roness Municipal Secondary School scored 16 points and in this stage the first and second runner up will be competing in the next day of the Inter Secondary School quiz competition. The first day of the competition, the schools that was participated in the second rounds in the afternoon session were, Prince of Wales School (POW), The Annie Walsh Memorial School and Services Secondary School. The final scores are Prince of Wales school scores 44 point, The Annie Walsh Memorial School scores 45 point, Services Secondary School scores 33 point. And the first and second runner up will be participating at the second day of the competition, and they are Government Junior Secondary School, Freetown Secondary School for Girls, Annie Walsh Memorial School, Prince of Wales School.
On Friday 6th May 2022, the schools that was participated in Annie Walsh Memorial School, Prince of Wales School, Government Junior Secondary School, and Freetown Secondary School for Girls. In the final scores of the competition, Freetown Secondary School for Girls Scores 37 point, prince of wales School scores 43 point, Government Secondary School scores 44 point, and Annie Walsh Memorial School scores 46 point. The winner of the Inter Secondary School quiz Competition was Annie Walsh Memorial School, which took 1st position. Government Junior Secondary School became the runner up of the competition, Prince of Wales School came 3rd position. Freetown Secondary School for Girls came 4th position.
In his closing statement, the chairman for National Council for civic Education, Kalilu Tutangi said he was impressed to see the children from the different schools answering tangible questions in the quiz competition. He furthered that the council had come together and developed seven text books that were going to be used for teaching of civics in schools across the country. He continued that the books were currently being distributed to all the schools in the country from class1 to JSS3. He stated that early next year all the students will have the opportunity to study civics as a subject in their schools. He expressed hope that Civic will eventually become a core subject at the BECE class. He maintained that the questions of the quiz competition were taken from the contents of the books.
One of the competitors from the Annie Walsh Memorial School, Deon Temple, and a JSS2 pupil said the competition was hard work and dedication, and making sure that they don’t give up or be afraid of any competition. She said they only gave them six days to study for the competition and the competition means a lot to herself and the school, like integrity and good name of the school.
One of the competitors of the Government Junior Secondary School, Ibrahim Sesay, JSS3 pupil, said last year competition they were not be able to make it in the competition, which they came 5th position, and this year competition was great for him and was excited for them to became the runner up. He furthered that they were given one week to study, and they were having sleepless night and that means great to him. He concluded that he will be ready for any competition, and this is his first time to be taking part in the quiz competition.
The judges for the Inter Secondary School competition was Madam Patricia Conteh of National council of Civic Education, and Samuel Wyse Bangura of African Young Voices Television.
Distribution of certificates to the competitors and Prizes to the winners climaxed the occasion.
