The President of the Independent Private Schools Association, Mrs. Helen Keili, has revealed a troubling truth – about 240 private schools are at risk of not participating in the 2024/5 WASSCE examination administered by WAEC (West African Examinations Council).

Facing a barrage of questions from journalists on Monday 11th of March 2024, Mrs. Keili explained that the private schools had failed to submit their continuous assessment grades which forms 30% of their cumulative grades to WAEC, the examination body responsible for conducting the standardized tests. She lamented the financial challenges plaguing these institutions, which had led to the delay in submitting the crucial assessments. Despite their earnest efforts, the portal for submission had already been closed, leaving the fate of hundreds of students hanging in the balance.

The Chairman of the Committee of Basic Education Hon. Foday Madie Alpha Jabbie echoed Mrs. Keili’s sentiments, urging WAEC to reconsider their stance and reopen the portal for submission. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that all students, regardless of their school’s financial status, had the opportunity to take the exams that could shape their futures.

For the students, the prospect of not being able to sit for the government exams meant dashed dreams and uncertain futures. Many had spent years diligently preparing for this moment, only to be faced with the possibility of being denied the chance to prove their worth academically.

Parents, too, were deeply troubled by the implications of the situation. They had invested not only their hard-earned money but also their hopes and aspirations in their children’s education. The thought of their children being deprived of this opportunity filled them with dread and despair.
