The Sierra Freetown Lions Club, a Chartered Club of the Lions Clubs International held its beach cleaning exercise on Saturday, the 4th day of March 2023, in a bid to promote awareness in environmental sustainability and cleanliness.
The Lions Clubs International is a service organization established by a Chicago Insurance broker Melvin Jones in 1917 to foster a spirit of “generous consideration” among people of the world and to promote good governance, good citizenship, and an active interest in civic, social, commercial and moral welfare. Our organization, The Lions Clubs International is uniting its services around five global causes-Environment protection, vision, diabetes prevention/treatment, fight against hunger and childhood cancer.
The cleaning exercise which took place at Lumley/Aberdeen Beach is part of the effort by Lions in Sierra Leone to protect the environment and the said exercise attracted a good number of Sierra Freetown Lions Club members, volunteers, and members of the public who came together to clean up the beach and it’s surroundings.
This event is part of the Lions Clubs International’s efforts to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our environment clean and healthy for a healthy living.
Speaking about the event, the President of the Sierra Freetown Lions Club, Lion Alfred Kamanda, said: “We are delighted to have organised this beach cleaning exercise, which is an important step towards preserving our environment. Our aim is to promote sustainable development and raise awareness about the dangers of environmental pollution.”
The Lions Club members and volunteers collected a significant amount of waste, including plastic bottles, food packaging, and other debris that had been washed up on the beach. The clean-up exercise was an eye-opener for many participants who were shocked to see the amount of litter and waste on the beach.
The exercise also included educational sessions where participants were taught about the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment and the need for individuals and communities to take responsibility for keeping our environment clean.
The Sierra Freetown Lions Club has pledged to continue organizing similar events in the future and to work with other organizations to promote sustainable development and environmental conservation.
The success of the beach cleaning exercise was commended by a representative of the Tourist Board, who praised the Sierra Freetown Lions Club for its efforts toward environmental conservation.
The event was a reminder that we all have a role to play in keeping our environment clean and healthy. It is important for individuals, organizations, and communities to work together toward creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
For persons who are interested in being Members of the Lions Club, we wish to inform you that Membership in the Lions Club is by “Invitation only” as mandated by our constitution and by-laws. All new Member Applicants need a sponsor who is an active member and of good standing in the club. In our club, we choose our members diligently as it requires time and financial commitments. You must be of good moral character in your community. Acceptance of Membership is subject to the approval of the majority of the club’s Board.
As of January 2020, Lions Clubs International has over 46,000 clubs and more than 1.4 Million Members (including the youth wing Leo) in more than 200 countries and geographic areas around the world. Sierra Leone at the moment has only one Lions Club and we are working as a team to have more Lions and Leo Clubs in all Districts in Sierra Leone.
