In recent years, our nation has been plagued by a new drug known as Kush, which has silently crept into the lives of our youths, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. Abdul Sheka Kargbo, Head of National Drug Law enforcement agency in Sierra Leone described the drug as an amalgamation of various chemicals and plants that mimic the natural (cannabinoid) THC found in Cannabis.
Kush, a powerful sedative, indiscriminately immobilizes its users, pushing them into a peculiar state of slumber while standing or sitting. Though seemingly hidden from harm’s way, its effects reverberate through every aspect of an individual’s life, unleashing a multitude of threats that extend far beyond the realm of physical health. It has suddenly become a topic for discussion in every sphere of our society; in churches, mosques, social or political gathering. Even in parliament, the issue of Kush was in the forefront.
The first and most alarming threat posed by Kush is on life itself. While engaged in a seemingly mundane activity, such as standing in a crowded setting or sitting at a public place, the users become completely defenseless. This vulnerability exposes them to a heightened risk of accidents, robberies, and other potential dangers, placing their lives at great peril.
Beyond the immediate risks, the economic impact on Kush users is staggering. The drug, often obtained through illegal means, drains their financial resources, perpetuating a cycle of dependence. Consequently, the users find themselves unable to fulfill their basic needs and contribute meaningfully to the economy. This economic burden reverberates beyond the individual, affecting their families and perpetuating a cycle of poverty.
The social and emotional consequences inflicted by Kush are equally devastating. Users, stripped of their agency, become isolated from their peers and loved ones. Relationships deteriorate, as friends and family struggle to comprehend and cope with the profound changes in behavior. This isolation further exacerbates feelings of despair, intensifying mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
Undeniably, the implications of Kush extend beyond individuals and into the fabric of society. It fuels criminal activities and empowers a network of importers and dealers, whose sole motivation is greed. These profiteers exploit vulnerable individuals, preying upon their weaknesses and facilitating the spread of this damaging substance. It is essential that we condemn these individuals and actively work towards eradicating their presence within our communities.
To combat this perilous menace, both state and non-state actors must join forces. It is crucial to invest in robust law enforcement, enhancing efforts to identify and apprehend importers and dealers. Additionally, educational campaigns should be launched to create awareness about the dangers and consequences of Kush, targeting schools, communities, and online platforms frequented by youths. Rehabilitation centers should also be established, offering support and treatment to those affected by Kush addiction, helping them reclaim their lives.
The government needs to take the following steps to put a stop to the menace of kush:
Crack down on the importation and sale of this drug, educate young people about the dangers of kush, provide treatment for people who are addicted to kush, support research into new ways to prevent and treat kush addiction. Maybe a drug court should be established to try drugs related crimes including criminalizing the importation and sale of drugs as well as punishing the users.
Non-state actors can also play a role in reducing the demand for kush. Parents and educators can talk to young people about the dangers of this drug. Community organizations can provide support for people who are struggling with addiction. And the media can raise awareness of the issue of kush addiction.
In conclusion, the introduction of Kush into our society has had profound and far-reaching effects. From the threats posed to life, to the economic, social, and emotional impact on individuals and their loved ones, this drug has left no aspect of our youth’s lives untouched. With a united front against importers, dealers, and end-users, backed by increased awareness and rehabilitation initiatives, we can halt the spread of this perilous menace and restore hope to the lives of those affected.
