The newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu has advised the All People’s Congress Party (APC) members of Parliament to come to go to parliament and attend seating because they are representing their people who voted for them.
Dr. Bundu made this statement on Tuesday June 18th 2023 at the Well of Parliament.
He explained that what happened in 2007 and in 2012 with the SLPP wherein the then Commissioner Dr. Christiana Thorpe canceled a polling station in Kailahun and Kono while counting was going on. He said they in the SLPP were bitter but they were told to go police, but they try to reconcile.
In another development, the Speaker gave an acceptance speech after his election for speaker on July 13th 2023 after he pulled 92 votes out of 96 votes.
He pointed out that by the collective vote of members of Parliament pursuant to section 95 of the 1991 constitution elected him as speaker of sixth parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone.
He said that they are going to work with the five pillars of the executive by increasing the committees to thirty, noting that, in the fifth parliament, they failed in terms of oversight but that in the sixth parliament they want to achieve the President’s dream.
In another development, Pursuant to Standing Order 17(1) gives the power to elect committees such as the Parliamentary Service Commission, Select committee, Supervisory Committee, Business Committee, and the Appointment and Public service Commission.
