FREETOWN, Sep. 13 (232News) –The Sierra Leone Swimming and Water Polo Association on Friday disbursed Le500, 000 each to 10 swimmers both male and female at the association secretariat, Siaka Steven Stadium in Freetown.
According to Mohamed Turay the Secretary General of the association, it is a yearly procedure to give financial support to their school going athletes at the beginning of each academic school year.
He went on that the fund came from the international Swimming Federation under the FINA Olympic Assistant Support Programme (OASP).
He went on that what they did as an association is they write project to the international federation with their budget. In the project this year, he said they mentioned about ten athletes but stated that three more has been added which he said they will squeeze later to do their own disbursement.
Swimming, he said is an educative sport and beside there must be life after their swimming career, a reason they encourage them to take education seriously.
Meanwhile the swimmers are engage in a rigorous training for two international competitions in Guinea and in Ghana this year.
The Guinea competition is regional Youth competition which will take place on the 1st October to the 3rd October 2021. The Ghana competition will be for both Junior and senior swimmers from the 10th – 13th October 2021.
According to Mohamed Turay South Africa was supposed to host the junior and senior competition but because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the international federation has transferred it to Ghana. The competition will be Africa Open Water swimming competition and the normal swimming.
