FREETOWN – The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS) at Regent on Monday 25th January 2021 donated scholarships worth (Le11, 920,000), uniforms, school bags and shoes to pupils of the Logos Academy-SS Camp, Sio Elementary, Rural Education Committee Primary, Church of God Primary School and God’s Army all in Regent totalling Le 19, 713,000.
The gesture is part of TCS’s annual support to communities and schools around the sanctuary.
Presenting the scholarships and other items to the beneficiaries at the five schools, the Head Woman of Regent Village, Elenora Metzger recalled that TCS stated awarding scholarships to pupils who were affected by the mudslide in the community in 2017, appealed to the pupils to continue to study hard and forget about other things as the sky would be their limit and commended TCS for the laudable venture.
Some of the beneficiaries are Fatmata Kamara, Aminata S. Conteh, David Sahr Komba, Peter Kamara, Theresa Kanu, Kadiatu Conteh, Abu Bakarr Koroma, Junisa Jalloh, Mariama Mansaray and Hassan Conteh.
The principals of the beneficiary schools commended TCS for the invaluable gesture which they asserted is not the first citing construction of the Waiting Hall at the Logos Academy, SS Camp, annual award of scholarships and other school items to the pupils and commended all for making the donation a success.
The Founder and Director of TCS, Mr. Bala Amarasekaran revealed that as a conservation organisation they are proud of donating scholarships and other items to the pupils every year to catch them young to develop interest in protecting their environment, observed that a lot of children are not going to school in the community and disclosed that TCS awards over 80 scholarships yearly though inadequate and called on other organisations and individuals to emulate the sterling example to help advance government’s free quality education flagship project.
Mr. Bala Amarasekaran reiterated that TCS wants to do more but also constrained by the lack of funds underscoring that all have a moral obligation to help the less-privileged as TCS is setting the example for others to emulate.
The scholarships range from between Le650, 000-Le750, 000 depending on the class.
Parents who witnessed the ceremony were full of praises and commended TCS for the scholarships and other gifts to their children which they stated have helped a long way to alleviate their sufferings as well as help them concentrate on their studies.
