Every reasonable Sierra Leonean would be thinking about what the future holds for this great nation. What legacy have we actually preserved for future generations to inherit?
We have less than two months before millions of Sierra Leoneans converge at diverse polls to decide the fate of this country for the next half-decade.
The usual tension and desperation for political parties are heating up among thousands of supporters across the country.
One will liken the unprecedented crowds at parties’ offices to the long-winding queues at different fuel stations some months ago.
Sadly, we have soon forgotten. Or maybe our minds have been rebooted to reality. Otherwise, why have we soon jumped into dance for the rationale behind our problems? We have soon forgotten the pains and grief we have borne in the hands of greed and selfish politicians. But even if we have chosen to forget, it is good we remind ourselves for the sake of our children and the unborn generation.
Is this not the land we claim to love? Why is she going through torture by her so-called lovers? Certainly, her hope has been dwindled by those she puts at the helm of affairs. Her future is obscure. Her children are in anguish. They are been vitiated by the ones she trusts the most.
A notable man once said the more I think of past elections, the more I feel guilty knowing that I had inadvertently aided thieves in the position of trust, leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth.
How I wish this is the thought of many Sierra Leoneans. We will realize and consider the number of wounds we have inflicted on this nation. Why can’t we learn from our past and make amends for the future?
As the saying goes experience is the greatest teacher.” Sadly, it had not been the case for us in Sierra Leone. Many Sierra Leoneans are yet to learn from the past. Well not to my surprise, by reason of our political ideology.
The abnormal scene has begun unfolding. Our deserted communities are now being arrayed with a series of uninvited guests. Such are giving us a deliberate stop to rehearse their stillborn promises.
Elsewhere, the unemployed and abandoned youths at this time are beginning to be relevant. Other marginalized and minor groups are now gaining sudden interest. The accustomed political contention at many attire-base points is revamping in no small way. With the influence of alcohol and drug, if one might so put it, many gullible youths are involved in an uproar for their political overlords.
The deceitful politicians at this end have made tribal and regional dimensions their underpinning message to work their way into office.
Records abound that the 2007, 2012 & 2018 elections were won by the influence of tribalism and regionalism. Consequently, we elect incompetent leaders who hold public offices that do not resonate with their caliber.
The question is, why must I vote for my tribal man even when I know he is not fit for the task? This shows clearly that we are the main cause of our own problems. The choice remains ours to ensure we have a Sierra Leone we can all be proud of. With no time left, people should think and rethink who is next to entrust with public office.
The politicians are capitalizing on the credulity of our minds. Hence, they will appreciate it if we remain fools forever. The truth is, the more we become adamant to change the more our society will remain unchanged. Certainly not my wish!
It is high time we woke up, and put aside our differences. Bible teaches that a nation divided against itself cannot stand. Why must we allow politics to tear us apart? Let us be reminded that we bear a single name ‘Sierra Leoneans’.
We are represented by one flag: green, white & blue. We sing the same national anthem.
My dream is to see a better Sierra Leone that is devoid of tribalism and regionalism. Let us learn to put our country’s interest above our parties, ethics, and region. I wish to see a Sierra Leone where politicians will preach national cohesion. A Sierra Leone where the goal of every citizen is involved in nation-building.
Therefore, whosoever is reading this, please help promote national unity. Let us learn to think of Sierra Leone, and put her interest above all else.
God bless you, and God bless Sierra Leone, Amen!
