The Excel Daycare Nursery and Academy has commissioned a state-of-the-art science laboratory at its Freetown campus, marking a major step toward strengthening practical education.

At the launch on Friday, 12th June 2026, Civil Society representative Mr. Alphonso Manley said many schools halted practical science following the 2015 Ebola outbreak. He praised Excel for “moving ahead of the curve,” noting that its pupils will gain a strong advantage ahead of the WASCE examinations.

He stressed that practical learning builds essential skills, including observation, measurement, data analysis, and problem-solving, while also encouraging critical scientific thinking.

School proprietress, Mrs. Onike King, described the lab as a milestone in the school’s journey since its founding in 1994. Despite past challenges, she said the institution has remained resilient.

“We believe education goes beyond books,” she said. “It’s about innovation, creativity, and preparing children for the future.”

She added that the new facility will give students hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of science from an early age.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Conrad Sackey, commended the initiative and highlighted the importance of skills development and innovation among young people.

He emphasized the government’s focus on producing job creators rather than job seekers and reaffirmed plans to strengthen technical and vocational education nationwide.
