Masked Intruders Target Journalist at Freetown Home, Raising Questions Over Motive and Security

By Marilyn King

(232news) –

The reported attack on Africa Young Voices (AYV TV) journalist Mariama Jemima Ganda at her residence in the Spur Loop area of Freetown on the night of May 15, 2025, is intensifying concerns about the safety of journalists and the possible motives behind such incidents.

According to information gathered, three masked individuals gained access to the property late at night while Ms. Ganda and her family were inside. What followed, sources say, was not a typical robbery.

The intruders reportedly demanded that Ms. Ganda identify herself before physically assaulting her. Her husband was restrained during the incident, while threats were issued against the family.

Notably, no property was taken.

The absence of theft, combined with the apparent focus on confirming Ms. Ganda’s identity, has raised questions about whether the attack was deliberately targeted.

Ms. Ganda is known for her reporting on parliamentary proceedings, public expenditure, and government accountability areas that often involve scrutiny of public officials and politically sensitive issues.

Media observers say such reporting can place journalists at increased risk, particularly in environments where accountability journalism intersects with political interests.

This is not the first security incident linked to Ms. Ganda. In 2023, her residence was also the site of a reported break-in, an घटना that at the time prompted concern within media and civil society circles. The recurrence of such incidents is now prompting further scrutiny.

Key questions remain unanswered: Who were the attackers? How did they gain access to the property? And was Ms. Ganda specifically targeted because of her work?

As of now, no arrests have been announced, and authorities have yet to publicly identify any suspects.

The case is likely to test not only the effectiveness of ongoing investigations, but also the broader response mechanisms available to protect journalists facing potential threats linked to their work.

Press freedom advocates are expected to closely monitor developments as investigations continue.
